WHAT IS DIVESTMENT?
The global movement for fossil fuel divestment is asking institutions to move their money out of oil, coal, and gas companies for both moral and financial reasons.
Investments in fossil fuels are sending us down the path to irreversible climate change, and it is imperative that our institutions break ties with corporations complicit in financing the climate crisis.
Financial responsibility means investing sustainably.
What is the RSC?
The Regulatory Studies Center is an academic center of the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, and claims to be an unbiased research institute focused on improving regulatory policy. However, a 2019 report by Public Citizen, partnered with research from UnKoch My Campus revealed otherwise. The RSC received over one million dollars from ExxonMobil and the Koch network-support from those who will profit the most from de-regulation of the fossil fuel industry.
These ties to the fossil fuel industry means the RSC publishes consistently biased research supporting de-regulation that Trump's EPA often cites when rolling back environmentally-friendly policies.
HOW IS GWU INVOLVED?
This investment contradicts the university's stated support of the Paris Climate Agreement and directly undermines the future of its students.
The university’s Regulatory Studies Center and its fossil fuel investments threaten the habitability of our planet as well as the lives, homes, and general well-being of millions of people.
The university warmly embraces the Regulatory Studies Center, and allows it, under the George Washington University name, to provide biased research that threatens the future of humanity.
To salvage any semblance of academic integrity or credibility, the university must acknowledge the accepted climate science by holding the RSC accountable, and must end its current contributions to the fossil fuel industry to ensure a livable planet for its students.
WHAT we're demanding:
2) Immediately divest the university endowment from the fossil fuel industry.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP?
Let's increase pressure on our university to take accountability and work for a cleaner, safer future for its students and workers.
We deserve a livable future.
